RC 21 Political Socialization and Education - International Scientific Conference “Migration Movements in the Contemporary World”

On 16–17 April 2026, the Faculty of Political Science and Journalism at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin (Poland) hosted the international scientific conference “Migration Movements in the Contemporary World.” The event was organized by the Department of Political Movements and Ethnic Studies at the Institute of Political Science and Administration of UMCS in cooperation with Research Committee 21 Political Socialization and Education operating within the International Political Science Association. The conference was chaired by Professor Maria Marczewska-Rytko, while Dr. Dorota Maj and Mr. Jakub Bijak served as conference secretaries. The conference was officially opened and participants welcomed by Professor Magdalena Musiał-Karg, Vice-President of the International Political Science Association; Professor Katarzyna Radzik-Maruszak, Director of the Institute of Political Science and Administration at UMCS; and Professor Maria Marczewska-Rytko, Head of the Department of Political Movements and Ethnic Studies and Chair of IPSA RC21.

The conference brought together more than 60 scholars representing leading universities, research centers, and institutions associated with socio-economic practice in Poland, as well as representatives of foreign academic institutions from various parts of Europe and the world, including Bulgaria, Cyprus, Israel, the United Kingdom, and Hungary. Such broad academic representation fostered the exchange of experiences and the presentation of diverse research perspectives.

The main objective of the conference was to present the results of the latest research and to conduct an interdisciplinary discussion on migration movements in the contemporary world. The thematic scope included both theoretical and methodological analyses, as well as discussions concerning the determinants and legal aspects of migration. Particular attention was devoted to local, national, and international policies toward migration movements and to the impact of migration on states, regions, and the international system as a whole. The discussions also addressed public attitudes and the responses of social, religious, and political organizations toward migration, the role of social and political movements, media representations of migration, and models and initiatives supporting the integration of migrants and foreign nationals.

An integral part of the conference also included cultural events, which constituted an important complement to the scientific program. Conference participants had the opportunity to become acquainted with the migration heritage of Lublin, which allowed the issues discussed during the conference to be situated within a broader historical and cultural context.

The Department of Political Movements and Ethnic Studies of the Institute of Political Science and Administration at the Faculty of Political Science and Journalism of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin, in cooperation with the International Political Science Association, RC21 Political Socialization and Education, has the honour and pleasure to inviting you to participate in the international academic conference entitled “Migration Movements in the modern World”.

The conference is scheduled to take place on 16–17 April 2026 at the Faculty of Political Science and Journalism of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (UMCS) in Lublin.

The objective of the conference is to present research findings and to promote interdisciplinary discussion on issues related to contemporary migration movements.

Proposed areas of interest include:

Theoretical and methodological issues of migration movements (e.g. migration movement, migration, emigration, immigration, re-emigration, resettlement, refugee status, incoming population).
Historical, social, cultural, religious, ethical, political, economic, and international determinants of migration movements.
Legal aspects of migration movements (national, European, and international public law).
Assumptions and frameworks of local, national, and international migration policies.
Models and initiatives for the integration of foreigners.
The impact of migration movements on the functioning of the state, region, and the world.
Attitudes of citizens, social, religious and political organisations, and social and political movements towards migration.
The portrayal of migration and migrants in the media.
Analysis of selected contemporary migration movements.

The conference organisers would like to invite scholars conducting research in the broadly understood field of migration studies to participate in the conference proceedings. The event will also feature a student and doctoral panel.

Once positively reviewed, papers submitted by participants will be published as chapters in a scientific monograph issued by a publishing house included in the register of publishers of peer-reviewed scholarly monographs, as published by the Minister of Science and Higher Education on 18 January 2019.

The conference fee is 500 PLN (120 EUR or 150 USD) for both onsite and online participants. It includes conference materials, snacks and beverages during sessions, a formal dinner on the first day and a guided tour of Lublin related to the conference theme.

Political Identities Challenged. Exploring the Consequences of the Confrontation with COVID, Climate Change and Communicative Changes

We hereby invite you to a joint meeting of the Research Committees 21 (Political Socialization and Education) and 29 (Political Psychology) of the International Political Science Association IPSA. The meeting will result in a special issue of the journal Politics, Culture and Socialization PC&S (Barbara Budrich Publishers).

These days, political identities (loyalities, party identification, feelings of efficacy, etc.) are strongly challenged by COVID and the policy responses to the pandemic, by controversies and policy measures surrounding the climate crisis, and by changes in political communication (increasing speed, segmentation, social media, professionalization of politics, alternative facts etc.).

In-between IPSA world congresses, RC21 and RC29 want to meet with experts in the fields of political psychology and political socialization to discuss the effects of these and other changes. How do people feel politically? How do they relate to political power and political institutions?

We are not only looking for presentations of substantive traditional pre-article papers. Short presentations focussing on urgent changes and challenges are equally welcome. The workshop does not only focus on filling gaps in theory with empirical research. This workshop aims at an exchange of ideas about urgent changes and their possible consequences for research agendas.

Soon after the workshop, we would like to publish written versions of the presentations and discussions in (short) articles in a special issue/section of the journal (PC&S).

We plan to have a joint face to face & virtual workshop of IPSA RC21 (Political Socialization and Education) and RC29 (Political Psychology) connected to the emerita lecture on ‘The psychology of politics’/’De psychologie van de politiek’ by Christ’l De Landtsheer (former Chair of RC21) as a Professor in Communication Sciences of Antwerp University, Belgium.

Corona volente, we will have the meeting on March 18, 2022. Dependent on the number of participants and the way they want to participate (virtually or visiting Antwerp) there might be one hybrid workshop or separate physical and virtual workshops before the lecture (which will be streamed as part of the IPSA meeting).

The event is sponsored by the International Political Science Association IPSA and by Antwerp University. There will be no registration fee, but registration is mandatory, and acceptance depends upon availability.
